Presentation transcript:

English 2 November 11-12 I can analyze a writer’s diction in developing his tone. I can explain how a writer’s tone develops the theme of a work. I can demonstrate comprehension of increasingly difficult texts by answering literal and interpretive questions.

Voice Lessons Write the answers ONLY on your bell ringer sheet Read and think: A redheaded woman was there with Trout. Kate could see her rummaging through the cabin, dumping drawers and knocking things from the shelves of cabinets. --Louis Sachar, What picture do you get in your mind when you read the second sentence? Rewrite the sentence, changing the bolded words to a synonym. Which sentence is more effective and why? What happens to the tone of the sentence? Write a sentence describing a small boy making a mess in a restaurant. Choose words that are clear, concrete, and exact.

Tone and Theme What is the difference between tone and mood? Tone refers to the speaker’s or character’s feelings/attitudes toward a subject. Mood refers to the reader’s feelings. What is theme? Theme is the universal importance or truth to the reading. Can a theme be expressed in one word? NO! Theme is always expressed in a sentence. For example, one theme that Ishmael Beah says that he develops in his novel is “War destroys the culture of a community.”

Inner Circle Label the top of your paper: A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah Look for a word that stands out to you and describes the tone set in chapter two. In the smallest inner circle: Write your tone word Quote the sentence your tone word can be found Write the dictionary definition of the word Provide an explanation of why the word is important to the meaning of the chapters.

Middle Circle In the middle circle: Draw 4 images from the assigned part of the reading Write an explanation of the link between each image and the word you have written in the innermost circle – make a connection.

Share with a partner. Did you and your partner have the same words? If not, how are the words similar? What idea do they both help develop? If so, compare the pictures you drew. What do they all have in common?

Theme What is it... The general idea the writer wishes to express. Thematic Statement Examples: (Thematic statements are sentences not 1 word.). My Dungeon Shook- Change often does cause people to lose their identity. Love one another and forgive despite injustice. You past is part of your identity but it does not define you.

Outer Circle In the outer circle: With your partner, write 2 thematic statements (statement that explains the theme). Make sure theses statements are drawn from the tone word in the innermost circle. Make sure these statements apply to both your tone word and your partner’s tone word. Share with the group

Questions over Chapters 3-4 (pg. 22) How do the villagers feel about the Bishop? Provide evidence from the text to support your answer. (p. 24) Why do the rebels keep women and children in the villages they over-run? Describe the RUF. What kind of people are they? Support your opinion with three examples from chapters 3 and 4. (p. 27) What is the meaning of the word substantial as it is used at the top of the page? What is the purpose of the imagery used in chapters 3 and 4? What mood does it create?

Journal Is breaking the law ever justifiable? Why/Why not? If so, when? Are there situations in the U.S. where breaking the law is reasonable behavior? Explain.
