Questions?

What do you notice about these sentences? What’s happening in them? Juli started on her project for the science fair after she finished her math homework. I always throw up before we have a big football game. We usually have a snack when we get home from school.

Scenario Writing Prompt #1 (10 minutes) Your friends are all planning to hang out this Friday night. Sounds like it will be a fun time, and they want you to be there. But guess what: your family has other plans for you. Your uncle needs some help scrubbing out the garbage cans. Grandma could use a hand making the sardine casserole, and your cousins expect you to help them complete a 2000-piece abstract art puzzle. Task: In a written note, explain to your family how you plan to meet all your obligations, either before or after your big Friday evening plans (think about the sentences we looked at yesterday).

What do you notice in these sentence? What’s happening here? The soccer team quit playing because it started to rain. I got grounded for the weekend since I failed my science test. Rob can’t come over to play video games because he’s going to see the doctor.

Possible Scenario Writing Prompt #2 (10 minutes) You need to choose the music that will be playing at your family’s barbecue this weekend. Your friend Stefano really wants you to play some tunes from Carnal Corpse, his metal band. You respect your friend’s musical choices. But you don’t think his band’s music really fits the situation. The soccer team quit playing because it started to rain. I got grounded for the weekend since I failed my science test. Rob can’t come over to play video games because he’s going to see the doctor. Task:  Write a note to Stefano that thanks him for the offer but also explains why it’s not a good idea. Think about the sentence examples above if you need some help.
