Messages in Media

Company Logos Try to identify the logo without the name of the company How can we INTERPRET them?

How were you able to identify these so easily?

Memorable Logos Unique (Nothing else like it) Simple SAME LOGO EVERYWHERE (Consistency) Memorable Remarkability Market Research Design, shape, COLOUR!

What if it wasn’t memorable?

Too Boring: Mcdonalds M

Too Complicated?

Messages in the Media How can we INTERPRET them?

FOX vs. CNN Both covering the SAME thing: Possible Collusion between President Trump and Russia

CNN https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8OeCNVpYGg

FOX https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKri5TnAKig

Both of these are TRUSTED, MAINSTREAM News Stations Why is the coverage so different?!

CNN Donars 87% Democrat 10% Republican If they say bad things about the Democrats, then bye bye money!

FOX The OPPOSITE to CNN Mostly Republican donars ALSO, there is a market for their bias! Before FOX came around, the majority of news stations were biased towards the DEMOCRATS REPUBLICANS had no where to turn for news! FOX saw this opportunity, and swooped in to become the news station for Republicans

Overall FOX and CNN are the 2 biggest news companies in the USA They are able to exist, because they have the COMPLETE opposite bias of each other! Fighting = Rating, and Ratings = Money!

What other Life Experiences could result in a bias?

How do we ensure that WE get UNBIASED Information?

Bias in Beauty Standards

What do we notice from this Cover?

Obvious Characteristics Tall Long Legs Slim Perfect Skin (No acne etc.) Nice hair, eyes etc Expensive clothing and jewelry

What’s the Reality?

The Reality Hours of Makeup and cosmetics Starvation (Possible Anorexia?) Probably about 5% Body fat 14% to 30% healthy for women Clothing and Jewelry out of price range (Probably not hers) Professional model/ actress: She has no responsibility. All the time in the world to eat perfectly and stay in shape! Photoshop!

What do we Notice from this cover?

Obvious Characteristics Tall Perfect hair/teeth Perfect skin (no acne, etc.) Big Muscles (abs!) Athletic Sports Has time to do COOL things

What’s the Reality

The Reality Hours of Makeup and cosmetics, hair work Probably about 2-3% Body fat 9% to 25% healthy for men Most of us do not have the time or money to do “neat” activities such as surfing Professional model: All the time in the world to eat perfectly and stay in shape! Probably starving himself from food and water 3 days before the photoshoot Photoshop!

How do these Beauty Standards Affect us? ESPECIALLY young adults like yourselves!
