How Does Evolution Work? Individual organisms cannot evolve. Populations of a particular species evolve. Natural selection acts on the range of phenotypes.

Evidence for Human Variation and Adaption Venessa Williams Hai Tran Myles Everett Alex Detlefsen Bio 1510-A Group A39 September 13, 2012

Introduction Little known about genome sequences of Africans Common ancestors 1000 Genomes Project used new technology to view whole genome sequences Shared traits Local genetic adaptions Natural selections All humans originate from a common ancestor native to Africa. 1000 Genomes Project used new technology developed to view whole genome sequences of various African tribes to examine the origins of modern humans and understand the spectrum of human genetic diversity. Although the three different tribes that were tested share some common characteristics, there are genetic differences due to adaptions to their different environments and natural selection. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.cell.2012.07.009

Data/Results 15 African hunter-gathers complete genetic sequences gathered 13,407,517 variants found (5 million new) 37,797 nonsynomolous and 35,747 synomolous 50% traits shared among three groups Genomic regions that contain a large number of variants in one population also contain a large number of variants in other populations. Homozygosity (introgression)

Discussion Not an excess of shared characteristics Natural Selection Ancestral divergence Gene flow Local adaption Natural Selection Unknown Hominin ancestor Bottlenecking and migration

Conclusion Whole human genome sequencing can help determine factors of genetic diversity and unravel the origins of human life.
