Led by Jo Phelan, maths subject leader Ascot Heath church of England junior school MATHS OPEN MORNING Wednesday 27th March 2019 Led by Jo Phelan, maths subject leader
Since the introduction of the new primary national curriculum in 2014, expectations of learning and understanding have increased, especially in maths.
For example, by the end of Year 4, children are now expected to have instant recall of all multiplication and division facts for all the tables up to the12 x table. As from next year, there will be a national test for all children in year 4.
At the same time, the way we teach and the way we assess learning in maths has also changed. The purpose of this morning is to give you some insight into how we deliver the 4 operations – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. You will later have an opportunity to visit your child’s class and watch them learning maths!
CALCULATIONS POLICY You will find this on the school website. You will notice the progression through the years whereby we move from concrete/ pictorial representations to formal written methods of calculation.

The national curriculum There are 3 main strands to teaching and learning maths in the primary curriculum: Fluency Reasoning Problem solving
The national curriculum Daily lessons incorporate all 3 strands. We teach mental strategies to improve fluency and various methods to tackle problem solving. Children are also encouraged to explain their reasoning both verbally and in written/pictorial form.
