Finding fractions of amounts By the end of this lesson, you should be able to: Calculate a fraction of an amount e.g. two-thirds of fifteen: 2/3 x 15 Find a fraction of a fraction for halves, quarters and eighths e.g. a quarter of a half (1/4 x 1/2) or three eighths of a quarter (3/8 x 1/4)

% Decimal Fraction 60% 0.6 _3_ 5 40% 0.4 _8_ 20 75% 0.75 4

1 10 1 10 of 50 = x 50 5

4 10 4 10 of 50 = x 50 20

1 2 1 2 1 4 1 2 of of 1 4 1 8 1 4 3 4 1 8 1 2 of of 3 8 1 16

Multiply the numerators by each other to find the new numerator ( 3 x 2 = 6 ) Multiply the denominators by each other to find the new denominator ( 4 x 3 = 12 ) ( 3/4 of 2/3 = 6/12 = 1/2 )

Can you...? Calculate a fraction of an amount Find a fraction of a fraction for halves, quarters and eighths Find a fraction of a fraction for any fraction
