The Lewis & Clark Expedition

Myths about the Unknown Woolly Mammoths Erupting Volcanoes Mountains of pure salt Blue Eyed Indians that spoke Welsh California was an island

Expeditions Westward As you read the following primary source, underline specific objectives that Jefferson outlines and prepare responses to the following questions. Why would Jefferson want the Louisiana Territory to be explored and researched? Why should Lewis be so careful in taking notes and what should be included? What are possible outcomes of Jefferson’s investment?

Starting the Expedition Spent a total of $2, 324 on supplies at the start of the expedition. Supplies included: Transportation (boats, sails, oars, and horses) Camping Equipment Writing Supplies Clothing Medicine Weapons (muskets, gun powder, and knives) Mathematical Instruments (compass, tape measure, telescope, thermometer, microscope) Presents for Native Tribes Books, Charts, and Maps

Starting the Expedition Lewis and Clark started their journey at St. Louis Lewis, Clark and a corp of nearly 50 men traveled up stream of the Missouri River Made camp on river islands or along the shore line – Why?

Meeting Native Americans Lewis and Clark encountered nearly 50 different Native Tribes Some never had seen a white or black man before Others spoke some English and possessed European hats and clothing from previous encounters

Meeting Native Americans Conducted a “meeting ceremony” when they encountered each tribe Gave the leader a “peace medal” Explained land belonged to the US and President Thomas Jefferson was their new “great father”

Plotting their Course The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the United States. The area was too large for only one expedition to map, Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark to the northwest area and Zebulon Pike to the southwest. Using the Red and blue Textbook (start on page 308), chart and label the areas of expedition.
