ACWS Shelter Sharing Day Report on 2nd World Conference of Women’s Shelters Day One: Creating Access to Safety Through Relationships and Technology June 22nd, 2012 Edmonton, Alberta

What is Day One? Network of Minnesota agencies providing victims of domestic violence immediate access to safety and services. Began in 1995 as 10 agencies; today 56 Secure & confidential website allowing programs to share available beds and service information Statewide hotline routes caller to nearest shelter – accessible in over 180 languages Transportation services for victims and children relocating Opportunities to share best practices and strategize reducing barriers to safety and services . Started in 1995 as a partnership of 10 DV shelters, a healthcare foundation and the United Way: Cornerstone is the organizing agency The Problem: Women identified placing between 8-15 phone calls when seeking safety The Goal: To provide women and children with the right services, at the right place, at the right time – on Day One The Solution: Create a streamlined process that allows victims of DV and their children to receive safety in one phone call

Day One Model Relationships The foundation of model is strong relationships between program to program, advocate to advocate. Technology Use of confidential “real time” technology featuring detailed service information and bed inventory. Best Practices Use of best practices in referral practices streamline access to safety and services. .

Minnesota Day One Outcomes Each year… 11,000 callers connected to the nearest 24-hour domestic violence shelter Over 2,000 callers and children found safety Over 350 women and children provided transportation to safety Network Results… Advocates participate on-going in leadership and advocate networks creating best practices and leading training and project activities Launched a collective social justice initiative creating greater access to safety for those whose life experiences intersect multiple borders of gender, gender-identity, race, class, sexual orientation, abilities and age.
