Who was Jeremiah? What can we say? There is so much that we can learn about this man this morning, that the time would be short when we begin to talk about the crying prophet… But the reality is that we need to start somewhere and let’s start by asking the question that we always ask: Who was Jeremiah?
Jeremiah, was likely born between 650 and 645 B.C. He was the son of Hilkiah, a Levitical priest, and lived in the town of Anathoth in the land of Benjamin in Judah. His ministry began during the reign of Josiah, and continued through the reigns of Jehoiakin, Jehoiachin, and Zedekiah. Jeremiah
Babylon destroyed Jerusalem in 586 BC. According to the Bible book that bears his name, he preached from about 628 BC to 586 BC in Jerusalem. During that time, the Babylonian Empire had taken control of Jerusalem. The Babylonians took the Jews as captives to Babylon as early as 605 BC and 597 BC. Babylon destroyed Jerusalem in 586 BC. Jeremiah
Jeremiah
Jeremiah lived through the invasions by the Babylonian armies, the deportations of his people, the slaughter of Jews living in Jerusalem, and the destruction of the Temple. Jeremiah
Jeremiah the major prophet, the most famous of the biblical Jeremiahs – One of the "greater prophets" of the Old Testament, son of Hilkiah , a priest of Anathoth (Jer. 1:1; 32:6). The meaning of his name: Raised up or appointed by Jehovah; Yahweh lifts up Jeremiah
When did he appear? He was called to the prophetical office when still young (1:6), in the thirteenth year of Josiah (B.C. 628). He left his native place, and went to reside in Jerusalem, where he greatly assisted Josiah in his work of reformation (2 Kings 23:1-25). The death of this pious king was bewailed by the prophet as a national calamity (2 Chronicles. 35:25). Jeremiah
Key Words in his life: The crying prophet! His job: He was born a priest but became a prophet by the divine call of God. Key Words in his life: The crying prophet! Jeremiah
The call of Jeremiah, Something very unusual…
Do you like your mission? The Lord chooses men that He has selected to be His spokesmen; in this case Jeremiah would be Gods spokesman. Do you like your mission? Well, it is not a matter of liking or not, if God has sent you to do something you must do it without arguing with the Lord. Jeremiah refused at the beginning to do and follow God’s word. Jeremiah
By almost any standard, Jeremiah was a failure. How do you measure success— by accomplishments, meeting goals, popularity, enjoyment of life? By almost any standard, Jeremiah was a failure. He was, however, a magnificent failure. Jeremiah worked for more than forty years under five kings (Josiah, Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin, and Zedekiah) and one governor. Let us look at Jeremiah and see what we can learn… Jeremiah
Jeremiah 1:4-7… “4 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 5 "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations." 6 Then said I: "Ah, Lord God! Behold, I cannot speak, for I am a youth." 7 But the Lord said to me: "Do not say, 'I am a youth,' For you shall go to all to whom I send you, And whatever I command you, you shall speak. Jeremiah
Jeremiah knew what was involved in regards to obeying God. Speaking the word of God means having enemies. When they are not walking according to God’s will, they are going to come after you. Matthew 5:11-12 Jeremiah was very concerned in the same way that many of us are… Jeremiah
Jeremiah 1:11-14… “11 Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying, "Jeremiah, what do you see?" And I said, "I see a branch of an almond tree." 12 Then the Lord said to me, "You have seen well, for I am ready to perform My word." 13 And the word of the Lord came to me the second time, saying, "What do you see?" And I said, "I see a boiling pot, and it is facing away from the north." 14 Then the Lord said to me: "Out of the north calamity shall break forth On all the inhabitants of the land. Jeremiah
Brothers and Sisters, this is a man that suffered almost like Lord Jesus did, and he was trying to avoid this message by all means for he knew what it meant to preach to people that always seek and do evil… Jeremiah was very conscious that he was going “to stiff neck people ”, that always killed the prophets of God. Remember Elijah? Jeremiah
Jeremiah 3:12,13,22… “12 Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say: 'Return, backsliding Israel,' says the Lord; 'I will not cause My anger to fall on you. For I am merciful,' says the Lord; ' I will not remain angry forever. 13 Only acknowledge your iniquity, That you have transgressed against the Lord your God, And have scattered your charms To alien deities under every green tree, And you have not obeyed My voice,' says the Lord. 22 "Return, you backsliding children, And I will heal your backslidings." "Indeed we do come to You, For You are the Lord our God. Jeremiah
Jeremiah 8:5… You must repent, and it must not be superficial; it must be from the heart Jeremiah 3:10 “If you do, there is hope” Jeremiah 4:4 Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, And take away the foreskins of your hearts, You men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, Lest My fury come forth like fire, And burn so that no one can quench it, Because of the evil of your doings." Jeremiah 7:3 Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: "Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place. Jeremiah
Familiar passages: Jeremiah 6:16… 16 Thus says the Lord: "Stand in the ways and see, And ask for the old paths, where the good way is, And walk in it; Then you will find rest for your souls. But they said, 'We will not walk in it.’ Jeremiah 10:23…23 O Lord, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps. Jeremiah 17:9… 9 "The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it? Jeremiah
As time went on, he had to proclaim more and more that God’s patience had run out, that punishment was inevitable (2 Chron. 36:16) and they should prepare to take what was coming to them… “16 But they mocked the messengers of God, despised His words, and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against His people, till there was no remedy. Brothers this happening today, many are mocking the message from God, but this they do in order to deflect the punishment that is coming to them. Jeremiah
When Babylon finally came, he said that the people’s only hope for saving their lives and their city was to surrender (38:2, 17)… “2 "Thus says the Lord: 'He who remains in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence; but he who goes over to the Chaldeans shall live; his life shall be as a prize to him, and he shall live.’ … “17 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, "Thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: 'If you surely surrender to the king of Babylon's princes, then your soul shall live; this city shall not be burned with fire, and you and your house shall live. Jeremiah
This message was presented in many ways: Preaching. Writing (30:2). love wrath talking But they did not believe in the prophet of God… Jeremiah
Jeremiah’s Failure. Jeremiah God did not fail, let’s make sure about that, his prophet failed, but God and His message did not.
Jeremiah Did the people repent? NO. Did they save their lives and the city? NO. They did NOT listen (Jer 25:3)… “3 "From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, even to this day, this is the twenty-third year in which the word of the Lord has come to me; and I have spoken to you, rising early and speaking, but you have not listened. After forty-plus years of preaching, all he had to show for it was the smoking ruins of a once beautiful city (39:6-8; 52:3-23.)! Don’t you ever come and tell me that God is an unloving God. We are no matter the time in which we are living, stiff neck people! Jeremiah
Jeremiah Was he appreciated for what he tried to do? No. He was opposed to by the people, the priests, the (false) prophets, and the princes. They threatened him (26:8ff.). They mocked him (18:18; 20:7). They hit him (20:2). They restricted his movements (36:5). They burned his message (36). They put him in public stocks (20:2). They imprisoned him for years (32:2, 3; 37:15, 21). They put him in a dungeon to die (38). Jeremiah
He complained to the Lord. Was he happy? No. He did not want to preach in the first place— and he did not want to continue. He complained to the Lord. At least five complaint sections appear in the book (chaps. 11, 12, 15, 17, 18, and 20). He is known as “the weeping prophet” (9:1, 10; 14:17) Jeremiah
THE MAGNIFICENT FAILURE. In spite of it all, he did not quit. He was faithful to his charge daily for over forty years. Jer 20:9 “9 Then I said, "I will not make mention of Him, Nor speak anymore in His name." But His word was in my heart like a burning fire Shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, And I could not. We need this message (see Rev. 2:10). Jeremiah
He exposed their sins in every form, shape or colour. Jeremiah is an example for Today… Jeremiah reminds us that we too may be called to face opposition. Acts 18:6 If we are, we need to be as faithful in our ministry, as Jeremiah was in His. He did not quit, he did not run away, he did try to “fit in”, he did not please any one, he did not condone their sins. He exposed their sins in every form, shape or colour. Jeremiah-Jeremías
Jeremiah is an example for Today… Jeremiah challenges us to speak out against the Evils in our days. We are likely to be labeled “Intolerant” and our words may evoke hostile responses. But we are to be true to God whatever pressure others may bring to bear. Galatians 1:10 Jeremiah
Jeremiah is an example for Today… Jeremiah encourages us to share our inner life with the Lord. God understands and cares, even when no one else seems willing to listen. God will not only listen, but He will encourage and support us in our labors. Jeremiah
Jeremiah is an example for Today… Are you brother working like Jeremiah, Are you crying, are you sad, are you in trouble? The Lord will help you and He will bring you out of the Dungeon pit and the to give you the comfort that you deserved! The only condition is: Northside, don’t quit, and continue preaching the Truth!
