1 Past 30-Day Use Data Lewis County, NY

Background Students were asked the question: How often in the past 30 days have you _______? The National Average is from the Monitoring the Future data (www.monitoringthefuture.org) which only surveys grades 8, 10, and 12 The recorded responses marked any amount/occurrence more than 0 in doing the following:

Past 30- Day Use: Alcohol National Average -- 8.0 19.7 33.2

Past 30- Day Use: Cigarettes National Average -- 1.9 5.0 9.7

Past 30- Day Use: E-Cigarettes National Average -- 6.6 13.1 16.6

Past 30- Day Use: Marijuana National Average -- 5.5 15.7 22.9

Past 30- Day Use: Opioids National Average -- 1.1 1.6

Outcomes & Considerations Across all grade levels, alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana past 30-day use is trending down. In some areas we are higher than the national average. Sample sizes have varied: In 2018: 219 6th graders, 240 8th graders, 208 10th graders, and 239 12th graders were surveyed (906 youth total) The total youth surveyed in other years: 2015- 990 students 2012- 1136 students The opioid 30 day use is an average of heroin, amphetamines, sedatives, and tranquilizers as the PNA separates all of these into specific questions. More data will need to be collected in the next few years to assess trends with electronic cigarettes.

Outcomes & Considerations Great gains are made from 6th to 10th grade in perceived risk Student exposure by Grade 12 may affect perceived risk Greatest concern is that only 51.5% of 12th graders see a risk in marijuana use of 1 to 2 times a week

Questions were asked in regards to how alcohol was obtained. Background Questions were asked in regards to how alcohol was obtained. Data is all grade levels together and smaller sample sizes (less students answered). Where obtained: 227 students total Where drank: 241 students total Question regarding police is based on total percentage of all students who answered.
