Life Science Connection Atoms The building blocks of Matter Consists of Protons (+), Electrons (-), and Neutrons (N). Atoms of the same element always have the same number of protons – the number of protons determine the element Question: What does the atom remind you of from class? Life Science Connection Question: Is an atom smaller than a cell or a cell smaller than an atom? Explain your answer.

Elements Consists of only one kind of atom, Cannot be broken down into a simpler type of matter by either physical or chemical means Can exist as either atoms or molecules. Question: Can I have an element that consists of atoms with different numbers of protons? Explain your answer.

Molecules A molecule consists of two or more atoms of the same element, or different elements, that are chemically bound together. In the animation above, two nitrogen atoms (N + N = N2) make one Nitrogen molecule .
