Presentation transcript:

Effective Teacher Behaviours Up-levelling: Encouraging our students to speak and write using more ambitious vocabulary and phrasing.

What is ‘up-levelling’? Up-levelling is all about changing boring, general simple and compound sentences into interesting complex sentences that include precise detail and ambitious vocabulary. Children are encouraged to make ambitious vocabulary and syntax (word-order) choices in order to make their written work more interesting, detailed and nuanced.

How does it work? Year 7: Varying reporting-clauses (he said/she said) Year 9: Settings in texts Year 10: Characters’ emotions Year 11: Discussing mental illness Year 12 A/S English Literature: Discussing romantic relationships in literary texts

How to develop students’ vocabulary Key words – especially the challenging spellings Back to basics- use the board to scribe and allow students to photograph it for their work at home. This supports extended writing Starters and homework Challenge the teacher – a good way of correcting pronunciation The vocabulary challenge Using the dictionaries and thesauruses on the Ipad Using book versions of dictionaries and thesauruses Use it yourself- the teacher as role-model
