2. It is not possible to prove a theory. QUESTION: Which of these statements is/are true? 1. It is good to do research on a problem or question before formulating a hypothesis. 2. It is not possible to prove a theory. A. 1 only, B. 2 only, C. both, D. neither A hypothesis is an educated guess. To make an educated guess it is best to find out as much as you can about the problem or question you’re trying to answer before you make the guess. The kind of research in this case involves literature search. Research done to test your hypothesis is called experimentation. You can disprove a theory, but you can never prove it. You can gather evidence to support it. For a theory about a to be accepted, it must be consistent with every fact known about the subject. Most currently accepted theories in science would be very hard to disprove completely, although it is possible that new facts could require revision of parts of a theory. The statement “it’s just a theory” is not really appropriate when talking about currently- accepted scientific theories. These are quite reliable. Which of these statements is/are true? 1.
