IGMP & Multicast
Why is IGMP Becoming Relevant In Our Industry? Video over IP Distribution The ability to distribute audio/video over a network making the network switch the “matrix” allows endless combinations of the number of sources and displays. Most Video over IP products rely on standard IGMP protocols to function
Definition of Terms IGMP Join Leave Fast Leave IGMP Querier IGMP Snooping Jumbo Frames
IGMP Join When a device in the group asks to receive a particular multicast stream I WANT IN!
IGMP Leave When a device in the group asks to leave the multicast stream CAN I LEAVE?
Fast Leave As soon as the device sends the request to disconnect from the multicast stream, the switch immediately removes it. The switch does not take time to ask any other device if they want to stay or go, it simply disconnects the one who sent the request. I’M OUTTA HERE!
IGMP – Internet Group Management Protocol A protocol used to establish and manage multicast group memberships with devices on the same network IGMP
IGMP Querier The part of IGMP that sends a question message to each network device. That inquiry question triggers a reply message from the devices that want to be part of the IGMP group and receive multicast traffic. Like the auctioneer at the podium talking fast and asking for bids. In this case querying devices.
IGMP Snooping The part of IGMP that listens to the Group traffic and helps map which devices need which multicast streams. Like the bid caller who is listening and watching for responses from the bidders, then calls out the bids. In this case the request to join or leave the stream.
Jumbo Frames A frame of data that is larger than the standard MTU of 1500 bytes. Jumbo frame bytes can be as big as 9000 bytes. Jumbo frames can improve network performance by decreasing the load on the switch CPU by placing more data into a single frame, reducing the number of frames a CPU has to process. } VLAN Tag Preamble Destination MAC Source Type Data CRC Preamble Destination MAC Source Type Data CRC 9000 bytes 1500 bytes

A Few Questions You Might Have How do devices know to reply that they want to be part of the group? Programmed within the transmit and receive device to recognize the query and respond As the integrator, do I need to do any setup? Great question - yes you do need to program some settings in the switch Note - Although there are some IGMP settings that will be consistent in the setup process regardless of the video over IP brand being used, every manufacturer has some specific setting requirements, so please follow the instructions for the brand you are using.
