Make Up: Osmosis/Diffusion Lab If you were absent, use this PowerPoint to complete the lab sheet 

Part I: Gummy Bear Read through the procedure for Day 1. Answer the prediction questions for what you think will happen to each bear.

Day 2- Gummy Bear Today the gummy bears have been taken out of their solutions and were measured. Copy the data from the next slide into the data table on your lab sheet. Use the equation about the table to calculate percent change.

Gummy Bear Osmosis

Gummy Bear Osmosis

Cup A: Water Bear Water Bear Day 1 Day 2 Width (cm) 1.1cm 2.5cm Height (cm) 2.1cm 3.9cm Depth(cm) 0.8cm 1.4cm Using the data above, calculate the columns for “change in cm” and “% change”.

Cup B: Saltwater Bear Saltwater Bear Day 1 Day 2 Width (cm) 1.2 cm Height (cm) 2 cm 3.3 cm Depth (cm) 0.6 cm 1.3 cm Using the data above, calculate the columns for “change in cm” and “% change”.

Cup C: Syrup Bear Syrup Bear Day 1 Day 2 Width (cm) 1.4 cm Height (cm) Depth (cm) 0.6 cm Using the data above, calculate the columns for “change in cm” and “% change”.

Gummy Bear Conclusion Questions Answer the conclusion questions about gummy bears on your lab sheet. Refer back to the pictures to help you if necessary.

Part II: Egg Osmosis This is a picture of an egg that was first soaked in vinegar to dissolve the shell off to expose the cell membrane. Then it was placed in a 50% sugar solution and a 0% sugar solution. Use the changes in the egg to complete the questions.

Part II: Egg Osmosis 50% Sugar Solution 0% Sugar Solution Use the picture above to answer the questions for part II of the lab

Part III: Osmosis in Beets

Part III: Osmosis in Beets A beet was sliced up and placed in two different solutions: One was placed in tap water and the other was placed in saltwater. The beet in tap water felt firm and maintained a dark purple color. The beet in salt water felt soft and had a much lighter color. Use this information to complete the table and answer the questions.

Part IV: Osmosis in Carrots

Carrot Data Use the following information to complete Part IV of your lab: One carrot was placed in salt water. This carrot felt soft to the touch. One carrot was placed in fresh water. This carrot felt firm to the touch.

Review Questions! Using the information the lab and your notes in Packet 4, complete the review questions of this lab. Once you are all done, turn them in!
