Fork Lifts Electric jacks Powered Industrial Truck Mushroom Generic Sample Program Fork Lifts Electric jacks 29 CFR 1910.178 March 2012

Why? Powered Industrial Truck Committee approved as one of the important programs to be developed Sample Generic Program Completed Was published in the May issue of our Mushroom News Will be added on our AMI Web Site

If you or your employees use a Powered Industrial Truck – commonly called forklifts, lift trucks and jacks – to move, raise, lower, or remove large objects or a number of smaller objects on pallets or in boxes, crates, or other containers you fall under OSHA regulation – 29CFR – 1910.178. The principal goal of this regulation is to minimize the number of accidents, injuries and deaths due to incidents involving Powered Industrial Trucks that are operated by your employees.

Classroom Training Practical Evaluation The regulation requires all employees who use and operate a Powered Industrial Truck to be trained and certified. This training and certification includes the following: Classroom Training Practical Evaluation

Classroom Training Training shall consist of a combination of formal instruction (e.g., lecture, discussion, interactive computer learning, video, written material)

Practical Training Your program must have a way to measure results. There must be a way to measure your classroom training and if your employee can operate his Powered Industrial Truck Safely. The Trainer must have knowledge in the uses of how this equipment is used in your operation.

How to get Started? Do a JHA (Job Hazard Analysis) List of Powered Industrial Trucks on Property List of employees who use a Powered Industrial Truck Decide if you are going to use outside trainer or develop program from with-in company Set up Training Schedule

Two Options Outside Training Program - You hire an outside qualified person or company to do the training and certification of your employees In House Training Program - You have a qualified person on your staff who can do the training and certification of your employees

Critical The most important part in either Option A or B, besides the actual training, is that you have and keep a record of everything you do.
