Childhood Revealed: Art Expressing Pain, Discovery & Hope is a moving book of over 100 artworks by children aged 4–18 who have psychological, developmental, or physical disorders. The New York University Child Study Center invited clinicians and teachers to submit artwork created by children in their care. Shown here is Innocence of Youth by a 15-year-old boy with bipolar disorder: “The kite represents life. The string represents events that lead up to that time of life when we are independent. I represent myself as the boy that is sitting watching the others. I am watching the others live their lives and learning from watching.” The Lancet 1999 354, DOI: (10.1016/S0140-6736(05)77095-1) Copyright © 1999 Elsevier Ltd Terms and Conditions
