Earth and Space Science Unit 2: Minerals and Rocks Daily Objective: I can measure the density of different minerals. I can describe and explain the Rock Cycle.

Density Lab All you need is your density lab worksheet and a pen/pencil. You will be working in groups of 4 for this lab.

Density Lab Be sure to read and follow all directions so you can do this lab correctly. This lab does involve some calculations!

Notebook Notes Directions: In your document, write the following information in this order on the LEFT SIDE. (Your Name) Mr. Swisher Earth and Space Science _____ (Period) 9/20/2016

Notebook Notes Directions: In your document, write the following information in this order in the CENTER in BOLD. 6.1: Rocks and the Rock Cycle

Rocks The material that makes up the solid parts of the Earth is known as rock. There are 3 major types of rocks: Igneous Sedimentary Metamorphic

Types of Rock

3 Types of Rock Igneous Rock is formed from volcanic activity (heat). Made from hot magma Sedimentary Rock is formed from small pieces (sediments) of other rocks and minerals compacting and cementing over time. Sediments form from breaking down (weathering and erosion). Metamorphic Rocks are formed when existing rocks are changed by heat or pressure.

Law of Conservation of Matter What does it mean to conserve something? Law of Conservation of Matter: Matter cannot be created or destroyed. It can only be changed from one thing to another.

The Rock Cycle Any of these 3 types of rocks can be changed into the others through a process called the rock cycle.

Rock Cycle Worksheet Complete the back of your Guided Notes Sheet as your practice for the day. We will go over this tomorrow!
