Earth’s oceans and The Water cycle Ch. 13: exploring the oceans

Standard and element S6E3. Students will recognize the significant role of water in earth processes. Explain that a large portion of the Earth’s surface is water, consisting of oceans, rivers, lakes, underground water, and ice. Relate various atmospheric conditions to stages of the water cycle.

Freshwater 3% of the water on earth is freshwater 1% of freshwater is available for people to use

Saltwater The salts we find in the oceans and sea come from weathering and erosion of rocks

How much of the earth’s water is freshwater?

3% of the Earth’s water is freshwater

How much of the earth’s freshwater is available for human use?

Only 1% is available for human use

Where is most of the Earth’s freshwater located? Are we able to use it?

Most of the freshwater is located in glaciers and polar ice caps. We cannot use this water because it is frozen so we must use water from lakes and groundwater.

What is the Water Cycle? Continuous movement of water from the ocean to the atmosphere to the land and back to the ocean

Important Processes in the Water Cycle Evaporation and Condensation are essential processes in the water cycle Water that has been evaporated is cleaner than the water that is left on the ground Condensation returns water to its liquid state

Why is the water cycle important?

Each part of the cycle drives the other parts. Water is constantly being cycled between the atmosphere, the ocean and land. This cycling is a very important process that helps sustain life on Earth.

Important Processes in the Water Cycle Condensation Precipitation Transpiration Runoff Accumulation Infiltration
