Imperialism A policy in which a strong nation seeks to dominate other countries politically, socially, and economically.

Nationalism A strong feeling of pride in and devotion to one’s country

Empire A group of states or territories governed by one ruler

Missionaries People dedicated to spreading a religion

Sphere of Influence A foreign region in which a nation has control over trade and other economic activities.

Protectorate Country with its own government but under the control of an outside power.

Social Darwinism The application of ideas about evolution and "survival of the fittest" to human societies - particularly as a justification for their imperialist expansion.

Militarism A glorification of military power "Might=Right"
