NAPLAN ONLINE Information session for Parents

Why do students do NAPLAN? The assessment provides parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the test. NAPLAN also provides schools with information about how curriculum programs are meeting the needs of students.

What is assessed? NAPLAN assesses – literacy and numeracy skills. All government and non-government education authorities have contributed to the development of NAPLAN materials.

What’s new in 2019? In 2019, students in Years 3 and 5 at Wellers Hill will sit NAPLAN Online. All schools in Australia in 2020 will sit NAPLAN Online. Feedback from the NAPALN Online trial is that students engaged well with the online format. NAPLAN Online is NOT a test of keyboard skills. Year 3 students will complete the writing test on paper.

One of the main benefits of NAPLAN Online is tailored or adaptive testing. This type of testing automatically adapts to a student’s test performance. The test presents questions of higher or lower complexity, depending on a student’s performance. Tailored or adaptive testing is designed to assess a wider range of student abilities and measure student achievement more precisely. A student’s overall NAPLAN score is based on the number and complexity of questions they answer correctly.

NAPLAN Online Timetable 2019 The assessment window for NAPLAN Online is extended form 3 days to 9 days – 14 may to 24 May This is to give schools more flexibility in scheduling to accommodate schools online infrastructure. Year 3 classes use the computer lab and one class are using ipads. Year 5 classes use ipads. All students (Yr 3 and 5) must all sit one test before the next test can start.

What if my child is absent from the school on the assessment days? Where possible schools will arrange for individual students to complete missed tests. Students are not permitted to sit NAPLAN Online tests after 24 May.
