Houses Made of bricks formed from mud and chopped straws (poured mixture into molds) Tools: T-square, mallet, brick molds, and plumb lines (straight and level) Rich had ten rooms and poor only had one (rich had painted walls)
Clothing men wore wrap around skirts called shendyt They were short Pleated‘ Belted Material was sometimes wrapped around legs Rich men had high quality linen Headdresses worn on special occasion All Egyptians mostly went barefoot, sometimes wore palm sandals
Clothing Women wore straight dresses with shoulder straps Pleated or draped Children did not wear clothes until about age 6 Rings, earrings, bracelets, buttons, necklaces, collars, and pendants Wore makeup Black kohl eyeliner Blue and green eyeshadow (powdered minerals) Henna for lips and nails
Role of Women Considered equal to men under law Own businesses Borrow money Own property Didn’t learn, taught homemaking skills and how to be wife Arranged marriages around twelve or thirteen Mostly worked around house and took care of children Poor helped husbands on farm Rich owned businesses Had to prepare food in gardens, make bread, etc.
Role of Men Inherit jobs of their father Take care of their family Take care of their parents when they’re old Had a surprisingly similar role to women often times Most men worked in agriculture Weaved clothes and worked for the rich as slaves The rich worked in business or government jobs
Role of Children Young boys went to school to learn about math, geography, history, and medicine Children were cherished but boys were always thought to be troublemakers Girl had it easier but had to behave and listen All children were taught to do good deeds and about the gods and goddesses No children were left, adoption was encouraged Had no responsibility other than to walk and play Taken care of, wear charms to protect them, always fed
Religion Life on Earth was seen as only one part of an eternal journey (live a life worthy of it continuing) Believed in magic, mythology, science, medicine, They believed that there was a higher power and a life after death People were expected to uphold ma’at (harmony) Life is an eternal journey and time on earth is just one part There was over 700 gods and goddesses
Traditions Kept shoes upright: disrespectful to put dirty shoes up to Gods The Eye of Horus: a symbol that represented good health but changed to evil Giving money to the poor: Ma’at would appreciate when people did this Language: their language is different from that of any other Eyeliner: if applied certain way, represents marriage Seboa: party thrown week after baby is born
