Inquiry Task & Question What comes to your mind when you view the image on the right? If you had to write a caption for the image, what would it say? Can you relate to the people in the image in any way? Pretend you are a person in the image: How are you feeling? What are you viewing or discussing? Image Source: Common Sense Media In this Slam Dunk, you will use multiple information sources to help you build an answer to the inquiry question: What is the most effective way to balance digital media use in our lives?

3. Student Activity SLIDE NAVIGATION Next 1 2 3 4 5 6 Use information sources on Slide 2 to complete this T-chart regarding the benefits and pitfalls of digital media use. Then, reflect on your own media use using these questions: Which media choices give you the most benefits? What signs are there that your media use may be out of balance? 4. Assessment Activity SLIDE NAVIGATION Next 1 2 3 4 5 6 What is the most effective way to balance digital media use in our lives? Your teacher/librarian will have you take the Digital Citizenship Quiz for this topic in Schoology. You may also have an opportunity to share your learning as described below. Students aren’t the only ones addicted to digital media. So are many parents! Together with your parent or guardian, track your media consumption for a day or a week using this handout. Note: Some smart phones have built-in tools to track your usage, which may help you with this step. Then, construct a digital media contract for all household members to follow. You may wish to view this idea generator. Your contract may be written or recorded using the camera on your device. You may self-assess your completed contract using the success criteria on this scoring tool. This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY

5. Enrichment Activities SLIDE NAVIGATION Next 1 2 3 4 5 6 Chris Rock. Alicia Keys. Danzig. Dave Chappelle. Childish Gambino. What do all of these performers have in common? All of them have had recent performances where they required fans to lock their phones away for the duration of the show. Consider why a performer would require that of their fans. Review several of these resources to determine whether you believe it is fair for a performer to deny fans’ access to their cell phones during a performance. Then, compose a letter or email to your favorite performer indicating whether you would still attend a concert if locking up your phone was required.
