activities in 2005 activities related to the Common Implementation Strategy Working Groups WG B - IRBM WG C – GW WG D – Reporting EAF – Flood protection activities related to further in-depth studies on the art. 5 results water balance focus on SW-GW interactions and ecological aspects

activities related to the Working Groups CIS WGs Italian experts the Tevere Prb experts partecipated directly and as external support

activities related to the Working Groups WG B - IRBM The Tevere PRB supported the Italian experts in drafting the document on Water Scarcity, in particular: chapter I ‘Definition and Assessment of different Phenomena’ chapter II ‘Drought Planning and Management’ chapter III ‘Long Term imbalances in Supply and Demand’ 2006 activity a case study will be included in the report studies will also be carried out in collaboration with the National Research Council (CNR) in relation to episodes of water crises in order to analyse vulnerabilities of the water supply systems and possible water scarcity scenarios, developed in respect to present situations and to future developments according to the planning tools in force

activities related to the Working Groups WG C - GW STRATEGIC CO-ORDINATION GROUP STEERING GROUP DG ENV: Chair – Austria: Co-Chair GW5 Mediterranean group (Act. 6) PLENARY FORUM 2005 GW1 Monitoring GW2 Protected areas GW3 Direct/Indirect Inputs direct partecipation 2006 GW4 Status and trends external support GW 6 GROUNDWATER CONFERENCE June 2006

activities related to the Working Groups WG C – GW 1 - Monitoring Tevere Prb Case study: Studies and management of a volcanic aquifer in an area subject to different pressures. Colli Albani volcanic structure (Lazio- central Italy)

activities related to the Working Groups WG C – GW 2 – Protected areas The group on Protected Areas mainly focused on Drinking Water Protected Areas, since no specific directive deals with this issue. In particular emphasis was given to the necessity of identifying the whole water body as protected area, including the recharge areas and to identify “Safeguard zones” for the application of protection measures for groundwater. For this purpose it is necessary to collect knowledge on the hydrogeological characteristics of aquifers in protected areas, their vulnerability, and the types of pollutants and pollution sources

activities related to the Working Groups WG C – GW 3-4-5 3 – Direct and Indirect inputs - external support to Italian experts for drafting the document 4 – Status and Trends - will start its activities in 2006 following the first results of the Bridge project 5 – Mediterranean – the activity of the Tevere PRB was slowed down because of organizational problems. However, we hope to be able to give a contribution also in this group

BRIDGE project 2005 activities 2006 activities Work Package WP 2 on aquifer characterization, in particular on issues regarding the influence of groundwater on associated surface water and dependent terrestrial ecosystems 2006 activities A case study on a volcanic aquifer for testing of methodologies in WP4 for threshold identification will be developed

activities related to the Working Groups WG D – Reporting The activity regarded support to the Italian experts in the WISE testing activity. In particular, work is being done to transfer the results of the characterization in accordance with Article 5 into WISE.

activities related to the Working Groups EAF – “Flood protection” external support to the Italian experts in drafting the Directive proposal on Flood Protection the proposal presented by Italy to insert the concept of hazard in the Directive is gaining growing consensus. According to the Italian proposal, hazard is considered as a function of risk and therefore it should be taken into consideration also in the mapping activity, as a preliminary step to the development of management plans

activities related to the Working Groups EAF – “Flood protection” Delimitation of floodable areas Rated flows calculated for different return times (50, 100, 200, 500 years) Hydrological analysis Hydraulic mono-dimensional simulation, in stationary motion (code HEC-RAS ver. 2.0) Topographic survey in sections spaced at 200-400 Comparison with the digital elevation model Calculation of the intersection between water surface and topography Hydraulic risk assessment procedure

activities related to the Working Groups EAF – “Flood protection” EXCIMAP- European exchange circle on flood mapping, an exchange group on the experiences gained in the field of flood risk mapping, co-piloted by France and Switzerland and aimed at re-examining flood risk mapping systems currently used in Europe, identifying experiences that can be shared, and drafting guidelines for best practices. The exchange group’s work began at the beginning of year 2006; Italy is represented by the Tevere River Basin Authority, designated by the Ministry of the Environment as Italian Focal Point for this activity. LAND USE MANAGEMENT: Exchange group of experiences gained in land management, led by Norway, that works parallel to the drafting of the Directive for soil protection. Italy participates through the Tevere River Basin Authority, which is the Italian focal point for this activity.

experience within the WGs We received a positive feedback from the work carried out until now. The WGs expressed interest for our contributions and it has been an interesting opportunity for us to deepen important issues in the context of the working groups. Mutual collaboration has proved to work well and has brought important results. The exchange between PRBs and WGs has been fruitful so far and we look forward to continuing this kind of activities in the coming future.
