English words that are polysyllabic will have one strong stress. Try this: manage, final, finality, resolute, resolution, electric, electricity

Answers… manage, final, finality, resolute, resolution, electric, electricity What patterns do you notice?

Word stress Stress in isolated words is termed word stress. In connected speech sentence stress. Content words… Function (also referred to as grammar) words…

Strong, weak and contracted forms Try this: Megan had decided to fetch them from the hospital. Which words are stressed? Which are unstressed? Unstressed (or barely stressed) words are considered a weak form. Stressed strong form

Contracted forms Content + function words when contracted = contracted form Contracted forms are often stressed (strong form) even though they contain a function word. Do not Don’t Do not touch the monkey. Don’t touch the monkey. Contracted forms are linked to spoken speech and informal English.
