Algebraic Expressions & Solving Equations Get Ready

Algebraic Expression A mathematical statement that usually includes one or more variables, constants, and at least one operation (+, – , x , ) but does not include an equals sign (=) Example: 2x + 1

Algebraic Equation An Algebraic expression that has an equals sign and can be solved. You can solve for the value of a variable. Example: 3x +6= 12

Variable A letter used to represent a value that can change or vary Example: in 4x – 1, “x” is the variable

Constant A value that does not change and has no variable attached to it. Example: in 4x – 1, “1” is the constant

Numerical Coefficient Is a fixed number that is multiplied to a variable. Example 2x – 8 2 is the numerical coefficient multiplied to x.

Term Part of an expression or equation Formed by the product of numbers & variables that are separated by + & – Examples: -1, x, 3y
