Author’s Purpose

Purposes of a text -Persuade -Inform -Entertain PIE!

Persuade The author tries to get you to do something or believe what he/she is saying or buy what he/she is selling. How do we know? (Use evidence)

How do we know? -Use evidence

How do we know? -Use evidence

Persuasive texts -Commercials, Infomercials, Ads -Essays -Brochures

Inform Explain or give you info on a topic. example: How do we know?

Informative Texts -Nonfiction: -articles -how-to guides (written or videos) -textbooks -instructions -recipes -Wikipedia

Entertain -Makes you feel emotions (sad,happy, scared) or it makes you laugh.

Entertaining Texts -Fiction: -plays, short stories, novels, poems -Jokes -Songs

How about The Giver? -What piece of the PIE? -In partners, write the purpose of the text (can be more than 1)and give 3 pieces of evidence from the text (explain a specific scene or use a quote, writing in complete sentences) to support your answer. (20 Minutes)
