Credit History Pay bills on time. Use online and automatic bill pay to avoid late payments. Keep your debt (the amount of money you owe on credit cards) low. Have insurance to protect yourself – medical problems are the largest cause of bankruptcy and if you get in an accident without car insurance your future wages can be garnished, which will become a negative mark on your credit report. Protect yourself from identity theft – check your credit rating at least once per year for free by visiting www.AnnualCreditReport.com. Build your credit rating – when you’re young and starting out you have no credit, which puts you in bad credit territory. You need to use credit to build your credit rating. C2
