Presentation transcript:

Warm Up 10/30 You will be taking a (very) short quiz on the first three chapters of Catcher in the Rye. These answers must come from your mind only. There will be no discussing the answers, or the questions, with your classmates. If you do this, you will earn an automatic zero on the quiz. Please take everything off your desk except for a ½ sheet of paper and a writing utensil.

Reading Quiz: Write the answers only. Where does Holden currently attend school? Describe it a little bit. (Chapter 1) What does Holden think about teachers? (Chapter 2) When Ackley discovers Holden’s new, red hat, Holden replies “this is a _________ _________ hat.” (Chapter 3)

Learning Target To participate in a graded class discussion on chapters 1-3 of Catcher in the Rye.

Discussion Preparation Create three types of questions: Text Implicit – Your question can be answered by making an inference about material in the text. Script Implicit – Your question connects material in the text to the outside world. Psychological – Your question connects material in the text to psychological theories by Kohlberg (moral), Freud (psychoanalytic), or Maslow (needs).

Discussion – new rules 70% if you listen along but do not participate. 10% for each participation effort that is substantiated by material from the text. 0% for each participation effort that is not substantiated by the text. Points are deducted for talking, for texting (automatic zero AND I take your phone), for sleeping (automatic zero, and I tap you on the shoulder), or for otherwise being a stinker.

Homework Read chapters 4 & 5 of Catcher in the Rye and TAKE NOTES (see the blog for the notes format). This is due Monday, November 3.
