Balancing Reactions Balancing Act

STIPULATIONS Atoms can not be CREATED or DESTROYED just REARRANGED Why rxns need to be balanced. When balancing, only change the COEFFICENTS not the SUBSCRIPTS.

Steps Write correct chemical formulas. Count # of atoms for each element. Balance each element or polyatomic ion. REDUCE if possible.

Mg + O2  MgO Mg = Mg= O = O=

Cu2O + C  Cu + CO2 Cu = Cu= O= O= C= C=

Now, lets look at you 4x4 WS Balancing Chemical Equation

N2 + H2  NH3 N= N= H= H=

You try…2

___KClO3  ____KCl + ____O2

You try.. 5

__AgNO3 + __MgCl2 __AgCl + __Mg(NO3)2

Now, try a harder one in your notebook

C2H6 + O2  CO2 + H2O C= C= H= H= O= O=
