Primary 5/6 Learning Leaflet Term 2 Jan - March 2017 For the duration of Primary 5/6, the class will take part in various learning experiences through four contexts: Discrete Subject Areas, Interdisciplinary Learning (IDL), Ethos and Life of the School and Planned Opportunities for Personal Development. Discrete Subject Areas Generally, we learn these subjects on their own. The knowledge and skills we learn can be transferred and applied in other areas. Literacy Primary 5/6 will continue to increase their reading knowledge through ‘The Thinking Reader’ strategies. This allows the children to use multiple reading skills throughout one piece of work. The children will complete before, during and after reading questions and discussion questions that highlight their prior knowledge of a subject, their understanding of the text and enhance their ability to evaluate and create new texts of their own. During Scot’s week we will be reading Scottish Poems and learning Scottish songs and discuss the difference in language from our normal day to day dialect and language and use our new apple clips knowledge to produce videos of our Scot’s week learning. Throughout the term will take advantage of our IDL learning topics as stimulus to produce various pieces of writing and continue to strengthen our VCOP skills. Maths P5/6 will continue to work on their numeracy skills through SEAL and Numicon strategies within the classroom. This term P5/6 will also be learning about time and fractions. We will be revising the analogue and digital clock, learning to calculate durations and how to interpret and create timetables. We will be revising our previous fraction knowledge and learning how to solve problems using this knowledge Languages Primary 5/6 will continue to increase their knowledge of French this term as we try to embed the language into our classroom. Science/Social Studies Over this term we will be learning about Mary, Queen of Scots and exploring the timeline during her reign and how she shaped Scotland for the future. We will also be learning about the rainforest. We will be discuss the impact of deforestation and how this effects the land and wildlife within the area. Health and Wellbeing Throughout the term we will be continue to learn about volleyball and increase our confidence and skill level within this sport. During Scot’s week we will learn new Scottish Ceilidh dances such as ‘Strip the Willow’ and the ‘Dashing White Sargent’ using traditional music and attempt to learn the dances to more modern music too. Curriculum Areas Religious Education During term 2 we will be discussing becoming a member of the Christian family, caring for the world and others and restoring our relationship. During our Jesus and the Kingdom theme some of our discussion and learning points will be repenting and compassion and mercy. Our final theme in March we will be learning about different moments of the passion i.e. the last supper, Jesus’s death and resurrection. We will also be celebrating 100 years of Catholic Education in Scotland during the Catholic Education week which starts on 29th Jan – 4th Feb. Expressive Arts On Wednesday’s P5/6 have been going to drama with Mrs Burdon explore new areas of drama. Within the classroom we will use our knowledge of Mary, Queen of Scots to create a ‘mock court’ to enhance the children’s knowledge of their topic learning and drama skills. Our rainforest topic will give us lot of great learning to create dynamic and interesting works of art.

Interdisciplinary Learning Throughout the school our IDL topics allow the children to learn a range of subjects relating to one particular theme in a relevant, enjoyable and challenging manner. Over our first term P5/6’s IDL topics will be Mary, Queen of Scots and the rainforest. The topics allow the children to use their learning in many different areas of their learning. Ethos and Life in School Our children are being encouraged to contribute to the life and work of the school and, from the earliest stages, to exercise their responsibilities as members of a community. This includes opportunities to participate responsibly in decision-making, to contribute as leaders and role models. Through our whole school assemblies, the children are given the opportunity to share their classwork with the whole school. Planned Opportunities for Personal Development As a school and class we enjoy hearing all of our children’s achievements either within school or out with school. It is fantastic to see and hear the children in P5/6 sharing their achievements whether they are academic or sport. We have opportunities towards the end of the week to share this with the class and the opportunity to share within assembly and school.
