Five principles of the constitution

What is a principle? A basic guiding rule or idea

What are principles that guide your life? What are some basic ideas or rules you live by? For me these basic principles guide my life: 1. Treat others the way I want to be treated 2. Tell and show my family and friends the “I love them” 3. Financially live within my means 4. Eat well, exercise often and get enough sleep 5. Find joy in the little things 6. Learn from my mistakes and do not repeat them.

Five principles of the constitution Rules that the framers referred back to when writing the Constitution Values that guided what the delegates included in the Constitution

Principle 1: the people rule America will have…. Popular sovereignty: People hold the final authority Representative Government: Government in which people indirectly exercise power by electing leaders (voting)

Principle 2: limited government Government has powers granted by the people People give the government its power If people do not like the way government is working they can take the power away Rule of Law – Both those who govern (leaders) and those who are governed (people) must obey the law - No one is above the law Government limited by the Constitution (written document) Man is not free unless government is limited “ Ronald Reagan

Principle 3: federalism Division of power between levels of government I. National (Federal) Government a. Delegated(listed) powers in Constitution b. Deals with National issues II.
