Aim: How did the independence movements begin in Latin America?

Why do you think Native Americans fought on both sides of the Independent movement in Latin America? Which side would you have fought on? Why?

Discontent of Creoles Creoles were educated and wealthy Unable to hold high offices in the colonial government (held for Peninsulares)

The American Revolution North Americans rebelled against British king Creoles read translations of Revolutionary Heroes’ writings (Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Thomas Paine)

The French Revolution (1789) French overthrew their King Series of wars followed—France fought against much of Europe Napoleon overthrows Spanish King and appoints his brother Latin American colonies refuse to obey foreign King

Economic Policies Creoles felt that mercantilism limited the economic development and prosperity of Latin America Do you believe the Creoles were justified in feeling this way? Why/why not?

Rise of “American” Feeling Many colonists began to feel like Americans rather than Europeans Growing feeling of Nationalism Disapproval of being ruled by “foreigners”
