What is a summary? A summary is…... With your table groups write a definition of summary on the index card provided When done, stick it to the board using a magnet. Summary: a shortened version of a longer reading that tells the basic ideas of the reading

Summary Rules Keep a summary short! 4-5 sentences Write about the main ideas Use both your words and keywords from the text Do not include your opinion or how you feel about the topic!

Example “Over 3.8 million years ago, hominids, or early ancestors of humans, roamed the earth. They were separated into four groups known as Australopithecus, Homo Habilis, Homo Erectus, and Homo Sapiens. The first humans made steel tools such as hand axes, spears, and sharp knives; these tools were used to hunt and process food. Early humans developed societies and cultures. Lastly, the most important developments were art and language.”

Individual Task Write a summary about “The first people.” Be sure to include: Time frame Australopithecus Homo Habilis Homo Erectus Homo Sapiens characteristics that define these peoples.
