Bell work (M) Prompt Breakdown 1. What type of essay should you write Bell work (M) Prompt Breakdown 1. What type of essay should you write? (informative, Narrative, or argumentative) 2. Find the verbs (What should you do?) Prompt: read “Weed Wars” by Roberta Kwok. Then plan and write a multi-paragraph essay that explains how science is helping farmers fight weeds that ruin crops. Must use evidence from the text to support your essay. Follow the rules of standard written English.

Rubric- Must be on topic to receive a score!! Focus/Organization- Intro and 1st supporting detail paragraph each are indented and skip a line between (1 pt.) Intro has a hook, bridge, and thesis that are on topic (3 pts.) Support- Has 1 example of text evidence that supports the thesis in a quote sandwich (3 pts.) Language- Uses transition words, 2-3 colorful words, and a mix of simple and compound/complex sentences. (3 pts.) Conventions- Uses correct grammar and punctuation, quotes around your text evidence. (3 pts.)

Bell work (T)- Reread passage “Weed wars” 1. Answer the questions #22-28 on your own paper 2. Now, Create a thesis statement for your essay Thesis statement- The article “weed wars” shows that science can ______________________________.

Bell work (W)- Plan Copy the informative 4 square on the wall Intro- Reason 1- Reason 2- Reason 3- Conclusion- Fill in the organizer for the prompt.

Bell Work (F)- 1st Supporting Detail Paragraph Turn in 2 paragraphs of essay today!! -Write the second paragraph for your informative essay (15 min. to write) -Include 1 example of text evidence, in a quote sandwich. Ex. Farmers do not want weeds around their plants. The article “Weed Wars” states that, “When weeds grow on a farm, they hog light, water and nutrients. Then crops don't grow as well..” (line 2-3 ) This shows that weeds are unwelcome because… *Peer Exiting before you turn it in: Is there a quote? Is it sandwiched with attribution, quotes, and an explanation?
