THE LEGEND OF MAIDEN ‘ S CASTLE

MAIDEN CASTLE

Maiden’s Castle ( Kızkalesi) is a coastal town in Mersin , Turkey. The town attracts visitors’ attention with its climate, beautiful sight , wide beaches and clean sea. Maiden’s Castle had its name 85 years before. The legend that has been told by the local residents caused this name to be given.

HERE IS THE LEGEND OF MAIDEN’S CASTLE

One of the kings of Korykos begs God to let him have a daughter One of the kings of Korykos begs God to let him have a daughter. Finally his begs are answered and the King has a very beautiful daughter. The princess becomes adored by everybody. One day the king orders a fortuneteller to the palace and asks her to tell about his daughter’s fortune.

Fortuneteller reads princess’s palm and gets frightened Fortuneteller reads princess’s palm and gets frightened. The King forces her to tell what she sees. Then the fortuneteller says that the princess die young. The King keeps fortuneteller’s words secret from the princess , but he thinks deeply… Finally he decides to build a castle made of white stones close to the shore on a little island.

Then he locks the princess inside the castle. The princess feels so sad that what her father did and fades day after day. Finally , a snake comes out of a fruit basket Sent to the castle and bites the princess and she dies.

IT LEFT THE KING WITHOUT A DAUGHTER, BUT IT LEFT US A NICE LEGEND….
