A Little About Me This is my 13th year teaching! I graduated from Shippensburg University and from Wilkes University with degrees in Early Childhood, Elementary Education, and Online Teaching. My husband and I are parents of Ayden who is currently in 4th grade and Noah who is in 2nd grade here at SCA. I spend a lot of time at my sons’ baseball, soccer, and football games and practices!

Agendas and Spiral Binders Individual Student Agendas Assignments and upcoming assessments written in daily in all subjects Parents please check to see upcoming events, assignments and tests. Brought home and to school daily (all classes) Spiral Binders Labeled for subjects, important papers, homework, and keep at home. Please only get rid of papers in Keep at Home section! Brought home nightly and to school daily for all classes.

Snacks, Water Bottles, and Lunch Your child may bring in a snack to eat during morning break. Please try to keep it healthy and easy to eat. Water bottles can be brought in and kept on students’ desks. Lunch will always start at 11:10 and end at 11:40. You may come and have lunch with your child on their birthday. Weekend birthdays can be celebrated either on Friday or Monday. A summer birthday can be celebrated as “half” birthday or at the end of the year. Birthday treats may be sent in for your child’s birthday, but they must follow our classroom guidelines. You are more than welcome to contact me with any questions!

Tiger Folders Tuesday Tiger Folders! Students gets Tiger Folders on Tuesday containing a “week’s worth of work” Please sign the packet and return all papers not later than Friday of that week.

What is ELA? ELA stands for English Language Arts. It consists of the base of our program which is reading, grammar, writing, and spelling. It incorporates a good balance of listening, speaking, reading, and writing to hit all important elements in literature. Our framework to our program is the reading series called StoryTown by Harcourt School Publishers. A link to our reading book can be found on our class website.

Weekly tests- takes about 5-6 school days per story depending upon the context and the length Reading Book Log

The Case for Reading 20 Minutes a Day Student A  Student B Student C Reads: 20 minutes/day 5 minutes/day 1 minute/day 3600 minutes/school year 900 minutes/school year 180 minutes/school year Exposed to: 1,800,000 words 282,000 words 8,000 words 90th percentile 50th percentile 10th percentile The Cumulative Effect: By the end of sixth grade Student “A” reads the equivalent of 60 whole school days. Student “B” reads only 12 school days. It takes Student “C” a year to read as many words as what a good reader does in two days. Student “A” develops a wider reading vocabulary that continues to expand and improves comprehension skills. Books offer almost three times as many interesting or complicated words outside the general vocabulary of a sixth grader, compared to even the most educated speakers. Simply relying on conversation to increase vocabulary falls short of what can be gained through reading.

Spelling Must be done in cursive this year -including homework. We will be reviewing all cursive letter formation. Once all lower case letters are reviews, tests will be completed in cursive. Words are given on Friday’s for the next week, but can be found on website. Homework is given on Monday and due Thursday. Tests are usually on a Friday.

Writing We’ll be doing some progressive writing of various forms…. narrative, persuasive, opinion, and informative Writer’s Notebooks- students will write in daily We incorporate the grammatical features taught in grammar as they need to be used authentically in students’ writings. TDA’s- Text Dependent Analysis writings. This is a huge focus on the PSSA’s.
