Nursery Curriculum Information Autumn Term 1 Dear Parents, In this leaflet you will find information about what your child is learning to do at nursery this half term and how you can support them at home. Our topic is all about me and our role play area theme is a home/kitchen. Communication Language and Literacy We are teaching children to/ Please encourage your child to listen to stories with attention and recall and encourage them to join in with repeated words in the story use and answer a variety of simple ‘who’, ‘what’, ‘where’ questions speak in simple sentences use talk to connect their ideas, explain what they are thinking and guess what they think may happen next use talk in their imaginative and role play, e.g. ‘This box is my castle’ respond to simple instructions, e.g. to get or put away an object give meaning to the pictures they create and give meaning to text and pictures they see in and outside of nursery look at books independently, encouraging them to hold them correctly and carefully Mathematical Development We are teaching children to/ Please encourage your child to use number names count in order to 10 use some number names accurately in play match numbers and quantity correctly show an interest in numbers they see inside and outside the nursery show an interest in representing numbers, e.g. by drawing marks and saying they are numbers or showing numbers on their fingers show an interest in shapes, e.g. naming them or playing with and making arrangements with them talk about why shapes are special, e.g. ‘a square is special because it has 4 corners and 4 sides that are all the same size’ talk about the shapes of everyday objects, e.g. if something is ‘round’ or ‘tall’ Understanding of the World We are teaching children to/ Please encourage your child to show an interest in the lives of people who are familiar to them talk about significant events and special times in their own experience, e.g. their birthday know some of the things that make them special comment and ask questions about what they see operate simple equipment, e.g. the CD player or computer, and to operate mechanical toys with knobs or pulleys, or real objects such as cameras or mobile phones Expressive Arts and Design We are teaching children to/ Please encourage your child to sing familiar songs explore how sounds can be changed, e.g. making loud and quiet noises with instruments describe the texture of things, e.g. rough, smooth or slimy construct, stack vertically and horizontally, make enclosures with different construction and non-construction toys. experiment with blocks, colours and marks, e.g. colour mixing engage in imaginative role-play based on own first-hand experiences or what they have seen adults doing, e.g. cooking in the role play area, and to build stories around toys, e.g. farm animals needing rescue using resources to create props to support their role-play

***WOW books are collected on Tuesdays*** Physical Development We are teaching children to/ Please encourage your child to move around safely move freely with pleasure and confidence in a range of ways, such as slithering, shuffling, rolling, crawling, walking, running, jumping, skipping, sliding and hopping. draw lines and circles use one-handed tools and equipment, e.g. scissors and making snips in paper with them hold a pencil between thumb and two fingers, no longer using whole-hand grasp say to an adult if they need the toilet, are hungry, tired or need something wash and dry their hands after they have been to the toilet, after they have played outside and before they eat gain more bowel and bladder control and attend to toileting needs most of the time themselves put their coat on with some help, e.g. put arms into open-fronted coat when held up and also pull up own trousers and zipper once it is fastened at the bottom Personal Social and Emotional Development We are teaching children to/ Please encourage your child to be interested in others’ play and to join in playing with other children initiate play with other children follow the nursery rules and routine and demonstrate friendly behaviour, e.g. initiating conversations, turn taking and sharing form friendships with other children and familiar adults separate from main carer with support and encouragement from a familiar adult express their feelings, own preferences and interests, e.g.’ Please can we have the dinosaurs out tomorrow’? select and use activities and resources with help gain confidence and be more outgoing towards unfamiliar people and more confident in new social situations confidently talk to other children when playing, and communicate freely about own home and community tolerate delay when needs are not immediately met, and understand wishes may not always be met If your child does any of these activities please write it in their WOW book (which you will receive after half-term) or take a photograph and stick it in!! ***WOW books are collected on Tuesdays***
