vocabulary

Searching line: a rough sketch line utilized to find the desired line or shape. It involves lifting the pencil off the paper and being gestural rather then precise. Horizon: divides the ground space in a work Highlight: a bright, reflective area (1-2 on the V. S.) shaped like an ellipse Midtone: a grey tone on the V. S. (3-8)

Cast shadow: shadow produced by a form on a nearby surface – shaped like an ellipse Reflective highlight: shows bending of light around a rounded form – it is not bright white, it is a dark midtone AND it is on the edge of the sphere, not in the cast shadow Middleground: area under the form

Foreground: subject and most detail including a horizon establishes the division of space into these three sections Shadow: area devoid of light (9-10 on V. S.) Background: area behind the form; furthest with least detail
