Chapter 8 Final Exam Review

All the members of a species living in the same place at the same time. Population The number of individuals per unit area or volume. Population density The relative distribution or arrangement of its individuals within a given amount of space. dispersion

A change in the size of a population over time. Growth rate The birth rate minus the death rate. A method of calculating growth rate The fastest rate at which a population can grow. Biotic potential

The maximum number of offspring that each member can produce. Reproductive potential The average time that it takes for a member of a population to reach a reproductive age. Generation time When populations grow faster and faster because they have plenty of food and space with little to no competition. Exponential growth

The maximum population that an ecosystem can support. Carrying capacity The consumption of a natural resource by a species that occurs at the same rate at which the environment produces that resource. Limiting resource.
