(7.3) Le Chatelier’s Principle - Regaining Equilibrium.
Chemical Equilibrium What is a reversible reaction? What is LeChatlier’s Principle? Predicting Equilibrium Shifts.
Chemical Equilibrium Section 18-1 Pp Equilibrium is… Equilibrium is not static Opposing processes occur at the same time and at the same rate.
Lecture 41/28/05. Quiz 2 1. Given the following reaction: 2 H 2 S (g) ↔ 2 H 2 (g) + S 2 (g) Calculate K c and K p at 1400 K if at equilibrium a flask.
Aim : How can equilibrium be shifted? Do Now: 1.Take out a calculator and reference tables. 2.What can change the equilibrium of a phase change?
Le Chatelier’s Principle When a system at equilibrium is subjected to a stress, the system “shifts” to relieve effects of the stress and restore equilibrium.

Rates of Reactions and Equilibrium Rates of Chemical Reactions The rate, or speed, of a chemical reaction is measured in units of a mass / time. Reaction.
Equilibrium Le Chatelier's Principle - if a change in conditions, a stress is imposed on a reversible reaction at equilibrium, the equilibrium will shift.

New Equilibrium established Just the Cl- Both Na+ and Cl- concentration → THE COMMON ION EFFECT Just the Na+ Equilibrium established New Equilibrium established time→ --the dissociation of sodium chloride in water-- --and the subsequent perturbing of the system with the addition of hydrochloric acid--

Le Chatelier’s Principle An Equilibrium System that is stressed will respond to the stress in such a way as to counteract it.

Le Chatelier’s Principle An Equilibrium System that is stressed will respond to the stress in such a way as to counteract it. If the concentration of a substance is increased, the reaction that uses it will be favored until a new equilibrium is established. (Keq remains the same). If the temperature of a system is increased the endothermic process will be favored until a new equilibrium is established. (Keq changes!) If the pressure of a system is increased, the reaction that produces fewer gaseous particles will be favored until a new equilibrium is established. (Keq changes!)

The Haber Process: N2(g) + 3H2(g) ↔ 2NH3(g) + 92 kJ (typically run at 200 atm, 500 °C with an Fe catalyst!) Run at high pressures (Haber devised containers to do this) Remove NH3 as produced Run at low to medium temperatures Use a catalyst to speed up
