Dress Code Do you or a loved one suffer from Dress Code? Side effects may include: sent home, call home, missing class instruction, citizenship mark down, feeling safe, tardy, duct tape used to cover logos, wearing used clothing, public shaming, lunch detention, being treated with respect, loss of privilege on site, practice professional presentation, and feeling personally targeted Dress Code Jordie 2 minute introduction max Materials- Chimes (Marissa) Crayons (Marissa) Color by Number (Marissa) Print out Notes for presentation (Marissa) Dress Code Handout (Lisa) Writing utensils (Lisa)

Color by Question If your answer to the question is yes, then color in the corresponding space on your person. Hana 5 minutes You have Crayons on the Table

Discussion Norms Speak your truth: Say what is immediate relevant and personal as it pertains to the dress code. Accept and expect non-closure: As with many things, the improvement of the dress code to be more equitable and fair is an ongoing process. It cannot be fixed by a single session, or a piece of legislation. Nathan- 1 minute

Equity vs. Equality Equity- All students are given the support and resources that they need to achieve the same end goal: college/career readiness. Although the end goal is the same, the process to get there is different for each individual. Nathan- Two minutes

shorts and skirts must go past fingertips the two-finger rule Why might one teacher enforce ____________ and another teacher wouldn’t? shorts and skirts must go past fingertips the two-finger rule no hooded sweatshirts no mohawks or dyed hair (8 minutes) Nathan? Participants will talk with their group for 3 minutes 5 minutes Have 2 groups share two different reasons Provide these if they don’t: Being of a different gender than the student Being of a different race or cultural background than the student Being a different generation than another teacher The idea here is that people are people and people are different

District Dress Code Awareness Jordie 4 minutes to read silently, independently

Is this easy for parents to understand? Can this be enforced equitably for all students from all cultural backgrounds and genders? Can this be enforced equitably by all employees from all cultural backgrounds and genders? Is this easy for parents to understand? Is there equitable access to purchase such clothing by all families? (8 minutes) Jordie Talk about the dress code using the prompts on the board With your group, re-examine the dress code and consider these questions. We really want you to read this bc we don’t want misconceptions (and BTW) all four of the things before (two finger rule etc) were dree code misconceptions

What can I do? Have other students do the Color by Number activity and share with your school principal. Ask that the district dress code is posted publicly as well as consequences so students know their rights. Ask to present to the staff: dress code policy and equitable questions the results of the Color by Number activity Or an idea of your own! Remaining have them read on their own Have them share ideas if there is time :)

Remember our Norm of non-closure... It’s okay we don't have the answer to everything right now. We encourage you to continue this conversation at your school. We want your voice!!!! Take 2 minutes to write comments, questions or concerns on the back of your Color by Number 5 minutes Hana Your data will be brought to District Leadership (2) Write the three bullets on the board for what you are comfortable with: No name!
