The rationing illustrates the scarcity of food during the siege 20 shekels = 8-10 oz. 1/6 hin = 1 quart Ezekiel Lesson 4: Ezekiel 4 & 5 “Parables & Prophecies of Destruction”

Ezekiel Lesson 4: Ezekiel 4 & 5 “Parables & Prophecies of Destruction” Sign of the prophet’s haircut and shave (5:1-4) Ezekiel is to shave his head and beard Priest’s were not to make unusual cuttings of their hair or beards as a sign of their holiness (Lev. 21:5-6) The fate of the inhabitants of Jerusalem is illustrated in what Ezekiel is to do with the cuttings of his hair: 1/3 is burned with fire, 1/3 is smitten with the sword, and 1/3 is scattered to other lands (cf. 5:12) A small number who were initially preserved would be cast into the fire as well (cf. Jeremiah 40-44) Leviticus 21:5-6  'They shall not make any bald place on their heads, nor shall they shave the edges of their beards nor make any cuttings in their flesh.  6  They shall be holy to their God and not profane the name of their God, for they offer the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and the bread of their God; therefore they shall be holy.

Ezekiel Lesson 4: Ezekiel 4 & 5 “Parables & Prophecies of Destruction” Reasons for the Destruction of Judah & Jerusalem (5:5-17) Jerusalem had rebelled more than others (5:5-6) God would punish her in unprecedented ways because of her extraordinary disobedience (5:7-10) Because she had defiled His sanctuary, the Lord would punish her with famine, sword, and captivity (5:11-17). She would be “a reproach, a taunt, a lesson, and an astonishment to the nations” (5:14-15, Deut. 28:45-46) “I the LORD have spoken” (5:13, 15, 17) Deuteronomy 28:45-46  "Moreover all these curses shall come upon you and pursue and overtake you, until you are destroyed, because you did not obey the voice of the LORD your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you.  46  And they shall be upon you for a sign and a wonder, and on your descendants forever.
