WATER SCIENCE

Explain the water cycle and groundwater, Water Science Unit learning goals: Explain the water cycle and groundwater, the factors that affect water quality, and ways to improve water usage.

Water Discuss at your table all the ways you can think of that you use water. Create a list of the top three your group agrees on.

What’s on the list? Likely you thought of water for… Drinking Bathing But did you think of… Water needed for growing crops? Water used in engineering processes, like in factories, cleaning, manufacturing? Water for transportation, like by ship? Water returned to the ground, so we don’t run out of water? What’s on the list? Likely you thought of water for… Drinking Bathing Cleaning things Swimming/water sports

Set up for Two-Column Notes Narrow column on the left for headings Wider column on the right for notes

Three States of Water Liquid – water Solid – ice Gas – vapor or steam

Rain in the Classroom Watch this video clip about how to make it rain in the classroom!

Water Cycle Water circulates between the earth’s oceans, atmosphere, and land, through evaporation, condensation and precipitation.

Sketch of the Water Cycle Follow along as we sketch and label the parts of the Water Cycle.

Importance of heat from the sun Water + heat vapor (by evaporation) Vapor – heat water (by condensation)

Check for Understanding! Use these signals: rising fingers = EVAPORATION, shiver = CONDENSATION, sprinkling fingers =PRECIPITATION. A bowl of water left out is empty 2 days later. A bottle of ice water is covered in little drops an hour after filling. Northern states get a huge blizzard of snow. The cupboard above a boiling kettle has drops of water form on it. A pot of soup has steam rising from it on the stove. Icicles melting drop water on people’s heads below.

Video Clip Watch this clip from Discovery Education, The Water Cycle. Think about: Ways we use water How water moves through nature Can we create more water if we run out?

Practice – Water Cycle Poster Name/period # in TOP RIGHT CORNER. Draw, color and label the water cycle. Include the following: Evaporation Condensation Precipitation Water (liquid) Ice crystals (solid) Water vapor (gas)

Add these words… Accumulation Runoff Transpiration
