Mid-semester Test Review

3 forms of capital Task: Review everything you know about the three forms of capital. Goal: Explain it better than anyone in the class in 2 minutes.

3 forms of cultural capital 2. Objectified State: Material objects that indicate our social class On the board, let’s compare: books, phones, cars, clothes, restaurants, hobbies 1. Embodied: Knowledge within us (language, literacy, knowing the norms and values…) 3. Institutionalized Educational degree (formal schooling is preferred over being street-wise) This cannot be separated from who we are, and it dies with us. (compare universities) (compare electronics, cars, books, clothes, school supplies on the board)

Review everything you know about the three forms of capital. In 1 minute, explain everything you know to a partner.

Village life in Java City life in Singapore Using Clyde Kluckhorn’s 7 components of culture, list at least 2 things from each of the 7 categories that would distinguish the following cultures from each other. Example: in the USA, we have General Motors cars (tools and equipment). In Indonesia, you have Esemka. Village life in Java City life in Singapore

Assimilation Acculturation The minority has to change to fit into the majority. The majority is slightly affected. There is no more majority and minority, they all become one. The minority’s actions are now exactly like the majority. We cannot see a difference. The minority has to change to fit into the majority The majority accepts and incorporates (menggabungkan) the minority into the majority’s culture. The minority keeps their distinct differences. The differences can still be seen.

Make a venn diagram of assimilation and acculturation. What is the relationship between diffusion and assimilation/acculturation? What are some causes of globalization? What are the effects of globalization? What is concrete culture and what is abstract culture?
