Phase Changes

Phase (state of matter) homogeneous part of the system in contact with other parts of the system but separated from them by a well-defined boundary

Heating Curve

Liquid/Vapor Equilibrium H2O (l) H2O (g) The vaporization point of a liquid or the condensation point of a gas is the temperature at which the liquid and vapor phases coexist in equilibrium.

Liquid/Solid Equilibrium H2O (s) H2O (l) The melting point of a solid or the freezing point of a liquid is the temperature at which the solid and liquid phases coexist in equilibrium.

Solid/Vapor Equilibrium (aka sublimation) H2O (s) H2O (g) The melting point of a solid or the condensation point of a gas is the temperature at which the solid and vapor phases coexist in equilibrium. H2O(s)  H2O (l) Hfus using Hess’s law to solve H2O(l)  H2O (g) Hvap H2O(s)  H2O (g) Hsub =Hfus + Hvap
