Arezo Ghiam IME 301 Project Winter 2010 Text Messaging Hello, my name is Arezo Ghiam. I decided to do my project on text messaging. Specifically the amount of text messages I send and receive. Arezo Ghiam IME 301 Project Winter 2010

Issue: Amount of text messaging in school vs. not in school. Hypothesis: I think that I use text messaging more when I am in school compared to when I am not. Data Collection: I compared the number of text messages I send and received during the 3 weeks of Spring break (no school) to 3 weeks before and after Spring break, while I was in school. Since I am graduating soon, I was curious in figuring out whether I will actually use text messaging as much as I do now that I am in school. I looked at my previous statements and counted the number of text messages I used when I was in school and compared it to when I wasn’t in school (Spring Break). I used 3 weeks before and after Spring break to get a better average.

Box Plot of Text Messages per Day Max=117 Max=119 Q3=93 Max=77 Q2=73 Q3=67 Q3=53 Q2=49 Q1=54 Q2=37 Q1=44 This is a box plot that shows the three weeks I used. The 1st and 3rd box plot represent being in school. The 2nd box plot represents no school. As you can see, the higher numbers are in the 1st and 2nd box plot. Therefore, more text messaging was used when I was in school. Q1=25 Min=24 Min=22 Min=9

Line Graph This is a line graph of the average number of text messages I used per each day of the week. As you can see, I sent a lot less messages when I was not in school.

Average Messages Per Week 460 280 This is a graph of the average amount of text messages that I sent and received “Not in School” compared to “In School” per week. As you can see I use text messaging much more when I am in school.

Conclusion My hypothesis was correct. Overall, I used text messaging much more when I was in school than when I wasn’t in school. My hypothesis was correct and I definitely use text messaging more in school. Therefore, when I graduate and am out of school I can lower my cell phone bill by lowering my text messaging plan.
