Public health- infection control Course Standards: Health science - 8, 13-14, 18, 23 TEST Friday!!!

Write the following questions on your paper, leaving space to answer them. What is the lymphatic System (LS)? What is the primary function of the LS? What is lymph and why is it important? What part of the lymph makes it “infection-fighting”? List the parts of the lymphatic system. What are lymphatic vessels similar to? Where is lymph filtered? How many lymph nodes are in the body? Where are lymph nodes located? What is the largest lymphatic organ? Where is it located? What is it’s job?

Lymphatic System http://www.livescience.com/26983-lymphatic-system.html Using the website above, answer the questions in the previous slide and draw a similar diagram of the lymphatic system as in the article. *Note: You do not have to draw every lymph vessel and lymph node; however, be sure to label the following: tonsils (and adenoids- photo in next slide), thymus, and spleen. Draw the detailed picture of the lymph node as well.

Tonsils vs. Adenoids

Read the following article and answer the questions below. http://www.entnet.org/content/tonsils-and-adenoids What kind of doctor is an ENT physician? What is special about the tonsils and adenoids? What does their job consist of? What is the difference b/n tonsils and adenoids? Which can be seen by just looking at the throat? What are the most common problems affecting the tonsils and adenoids? What can happen if they become swollen? Is it possible to develop cancer of the tonsils? What are the symptoms of tonsillitis? What are the symptoms of enlarged tonsils and adenoids? How are disorders of the tonsils and adenoids treated? -itis: inflammation

Highlight, box, or circle the following terms in your notes/questions: Lymphatic System Lymph Lymph Nodes White Blood Cells (WBC) (Lymphocytes) Lymphatic Vessels Spleen Tonsils Adenoids ENT (Ears, Nose, Throat) Thymus Tonsillitis Create a Quizlet for the Lymphatic System, including these 11 terms and their description. We will add more terms later. -cyte: cell *Note: the thymus is only present until puberty, in which it wastes away and is replaced by fat
