Welcome, Thanks & Introductions

Firstly, what is the overall aim of the project.....? “The final deliverable includes a report containing background information necessary for the elaboration of EU guidance documents on the correct implementation of the WFD and MSFD in relation to aquaculture.”

What is the aim of the workshop, & how you can help us? For aquaculture, what are the issues in relation to environmental legislation in your country? [Principally in relation to WFD/MSFD.] Are there specific issues in relation to the implementation of these Directives? If so, what? What examples are there showing good practice in relation to: Legislative implementation; Industry environmental sustainability.

Context: Drivers for sustainable aquaculture development (EU, MSs - MANPs); Drivers are social (food security) and economic; Opportunities: expertise and natural resources across EU-28; Key point is the environmental protection and sustainability of the operations and industry across EU-28.

Project: Background Information for Sustainable Aquaculture addressing in particular Environmental Protection Project commissioned by DG ENV and DG MARE; 9 month project; Cefas contractor; Objective: Guidance document for environmental legislation in relation to sustainable aquaculture development.

Guidance Document Shall: Outline how best to manage environmental impact of aquaculture activities; Support potential realisation of mutual benefits between aquaculture development and environmental protection; Complement Natura 2000 guidance.
