How did the Industrial Revolution and Western expansion lead to increased sectionalism in the United States during the first half of the 19th century? Industrial Revolution led to greater sectionalism because it led to the invention of the cotton gin. This made the South continue to rely more on slavery and set it apart from the North who did not use slavery. The Industrial Revolution made the North and the South more different from each other. The advances in technology made the North focus on manufacturing and the South on agriculture. Western expansion led to greater sectionalism because it upset the balance between slave states and free states. Every time there was a new territory or state there would always be an argument whether it should be free or slave.

Chapter 15 A Divided Nation: Big Ideas (pen and paper test, Monday January 23) 15.1 – Antislavery literature and the annexation of new lands intensified the debate over slavery. 15.2 – The Kansas-Nebraska Act heightened tensions in the conflict over slavery. 15.3 - The split over the issue of slavery intensified due to political division and judicial decisions. 15.4 - The United States broke apart due to the growing conflict over slavery.
